Long-Distance, Real-Time LED Display-Camera Communication System Based on LED Point Clustering and Lightweight Image Processing

LED displays can be used to realize the dual functions of display and communication simultaneously. However, existing display-based visible light (VLC) systems suffer due their short transmission distance are not practical. A long-distance, real-time display-camera (DCC) system is proposed in this paper. First, a LED-DCC point clustering scheme increase by multiple adjacent points for improving quality VLC signal captured an image sensor. Then, lightweight, back-forth, fast processing algorithm reduce introduced additional computational complexity caused enhance reliability information extraction from images/video frames. The experimental was implemented with 2.2-inch 16 × CMOS camera on smartphone. Experimental results show that achieve maximum data 7 m under bit error rate (BER) 0.5, which about 9 times previous system, 175 cm 7% forward correction (FEC) limit, 12 system. Additionally, decoding latency extracting each video frame only 13.26 ms, guarantees reception.
